In the North of Chile , Atacama Dessert is the driest place on Earth.

  1. Hi Mia!

Welcome back to the Summer Learning Journey this year. It's wonderful to see that you've decided to blog with us in 2017!

It is also really interesting to read through the three facts that you've posted about Chile. While I did know that it is the longest country in the world I did not know that the Atacama Desert is the driest place on Earth, nor did I know that the official name for Chile is the Republic of Chile. That is really cool. I wonder why it is called a 'Republic.' Do you know?

I am now very curious and will likely go and do some research into the meaning behind the word 'Republic.' If I find anything interesting I will be sure to write you back and let you know what I find!

Nice work with your post, Mia. It has taught me something new and encouraged me to go and learn more about the country.

    Thanks!

    Best,
    Rachel :)

  2. Hi Mia,

I have now had time to go away and do some research into the use of the word 'Republic.' Apparently it is a term that is used to describe any country that is led by a government that is elected by the people living in the country rather than being appointed by a special committee or born into positions of power like a monarchy.

An example of a monarchy would be England. The country has a royal family that is not elected by the people of England. On the other hand, countries like Chile and New Zealand are Republics because they have a government that is elected into power by the people. Interestingly, while Chile has chosen to indicate to the world that it is a republic but using the word 'Republic' in their name, New Zealand has not.

I wonder if our government will decide to change the name of New Zealand to the 'Republic of New Zealand' one day. Would you like them to change it or do you prefer our current title, 'New Zealand?'

I think that I prefer our current name. Calling ourselves the 'Republic of New Zealand' sounds quite formal to me...

I'd love to know what you think, Mia!

    Cheers,
    Rachel :)

  4. Kia ora Mia,

Happy New Year and welcome back to the Summer Learning Journey! It's really good to have you back on board. Both Rachel and I are super excited to see where your learning journey takes us :-)

I hope you have had a good holiday so far. Are you excited to go back to school soon? I'm really looking forward to school starting, because then I get to meet lots of new students like you!

These are three really interesting facts, thank you so much for sharing these with us all! Chile sounds like a very interesting place. Could you imagine what the driest place on Earth looks like? Do you think you would want to visit there? Whenever I'm on holiday, I always love to go to places with beaches so I can go swimming. So I might need you to tell me all about the Atacama Desert instead :-)

Keep up the blogging Mia, I'm looking forward to seeing what you blog about next!

    Ka kite ano,

    Dan.

I hope you've had a great break and are now starting to visualise your time visiting Chile:-) I did not realise the driest place on earth is in Chile - thanks for sharing your facts. I have never been to South America but it is def somewhere I would like to travel too. I think it would be interesting to visit the Atacama Desert. Keep up the great work learning.

  7. Hi Mia
Do you think that Chile is named that because it is so long and also look like one, I knew that Chile was long but never knew that it is the largest country in the whole world.
